The Finnish Patient Insurance Centre handles compensation claims for patient injuries that occur in Finland. A patient injury can be a treatment injury, equipment-related injury, infection injury or other mistreatment related to the injured persons etc.

The Patient Insurance covers extra costs and losses incurred by the patient’s injury. Insignificant injuries are not compensated for. An insignificant injury is defined as an injury that causes minimal pain and suffering with no permanent functional disability, and no aesthetic injury.

Valvira, the National Supervising Authority for Welfare and Health supervises and guides healthcare professionals and medical facilities in Finland. Valvira handles complaints concerning suspicion of maltreatment resulting in death or severe handicap. The Regional State Administrative Agencies handle other types of complaints.
